What is your opinion on Mount Rushmore, then? Two Slave-owners and a Racist Roosevelt should not be allowed on the same mountain as that Republican President Lincoln who freed the slaves, surely!
Let’s bring them all down and while we are at it, we should burn the Declaration of Independence, a profoundly racist document written by Slave Owners and signed by founding Fathers who were all slave owners.
“He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.” That was in response to British attempts to make treaty with the Plains Indians, granting them British citizenship in return for accepting the Sovereignty of the British Crown. One can only wonder how much better American Indians might have been today, had America remained a British colony.
Where do we start on destroying monuments of past heroes, and once started, where do we stop? This is a very slippery slope you embark on, with very poorly thought out rationale:
“If these monuments were about history, we would see statues of slaves being whipped by their owners, black families being torn apart as they were sold to different places, and plantation owners with their black slave mistresses and children. If this was about history and not white supremacy, we’d see a statue of an innocent black man hanging from a tree and a group of happy white people posing for a picture with his lifeless body.” You really think that statues of black slaves being brutalised by white slave-owners is going to be good for race relations in the USA? Are you mad?
That would be a recipe for endless racial conflict, irrational white guilt for the sins of their distant ancestors, and a never-ending grievance industry for African Americans. Let’s focus on what is good about America instead of poking sticks into anthills better left undisturbed.
