“We can house the homeless and feed the hungry, but our society does not do these things.” It used to: the homeless would be arrested for vagrancy in Autumn, and put into government-provided shelters where they were warm and well-fed, had medical and psychological assistance, and were weaned off alcohol and drugs, the two main causes of homelessness. After 6 months they were released in a healthier state and encouraged to find work. These shelters were low security prisons, and do-gooders insisted that it wasn’t a crime to be homeless, and these people should not be imprisoned for having nowhere to go. Now they sleep under bridges, in alleys and shop doorways, with no roof over their heads, no clean warm bed, no healthy well-prepared meals. If you don’t want there to be homeless people in your community, make it a criminal offense to be homeless: The Government can’t give homes and jobs to everyone who wants them, but it can always find money to build and run prisons. Let’s use them to give food and shelter to those who need it. It has got to be better than what we are doing now.
