Democrats will be in a spin today after Donald Trump proposes new laws to protect School Children
- He supports raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21 from 18.
- He supports removal of firearms from people with mental illness. Mental Illness would be either established by Psychologists, or by the Police in the case of offenders threatening to kill.
- He was going to write an Executive order to outlaw Bump Stocks, devices that accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle.
- Introduce Red Flag laws, which allow people to request that police confiscate weapons belonging to family members or those close to them who may pose a threat to themselves or others.
- Allow Teachers to bear arms so they can protect their children
'I like taking the guns early': Trump splits with Republicans in riveting gun-control meeting
President Donald Trump hosted a bipartisan group of 17 lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday for a discussion on…
“Many have pointed out that the suspect in the Florida shooting still possessed guns despite numerous run-ins with law enforcement, at least two calls to a tip line from people who said they feared he would shoot up a school, and a report from a Florida agency describing him as a “vulnerable adult due to mental illness.” Measures 1,2 and 4 would have had his weapons confiscated, saving 17 lives.
“But Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa pushed back on Trump’s emphasis on mental health, arguing that there are many people with mental illness ‘who are not a danger to others.’” This sort of proves that Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa is an idiot, or that he is running scared of the NRA. What does Senator Chuck think mentally ill people need military assault weapons for? The only “people with mental illness who are not a danger to others” are those who don’t have access to weapons. There may be armed “people with mental illness who are not a danger to others”, although I have my doubts, but the onus is on them to prove that. Trump signalled this when he said “I like taking the guns early,” Trump said, adding, “Take the guns first, go through due process second.”
“I think you’re afraid of the NRA,” Trump told Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, arguing that raising the age limit — something the National Rifle Association opposes — was “something we have to think about.”
This is sensible Gun Control, which will not affect the right of sane, law-abiding citizens over 21 to bear arms, so should be supported by both sides of the House. It removes guns from School-age Kids, from violent criminals and from the mentally ill: how could you argue with these measures?
What it will do is hand a massive case of cognitive dissonance to the Democrats, as their narrative of “crazy, senile, Nazi, NRA-puppet” Trump can’t survive this evidence of a sane, sensible, compassionate, measured and proportionate plan from Donald Trump. Most likely the Democrats will flip positions and oppose Gun Control on the grounds that Trump is for it, so it must be bad.
his position will infuriate the NRA as well, but it shouldn’t: removing weapons from kids, violent criminals and mentally ill people will remove most of the bad PR for the NRA. They should support the President’s proposals because they do not erode the Second Amendment rights of American Citizens and do resolve the Gun Control debate without putting the NRA out of business.
