There are three things to remember it you want to be affluent: 70% of people that follow these three rules make it into the middle class.

  1. Graduate high school
  2. Don’t have babies out of wedlock
  3. Get a job

So far, so good. But when you say “A rising tide lifts all ships,” you overlook the ships that are holed below the waterline by failing one or all of the three rules. When you drop out of school, get pregnant and go on a benefit, you have fired three torpedoes into the ship of your life. These ships won’t lift, they will sit on the bottom until the rising tide drowns them.

Reagan's’ famous saying should have been “A rising tide lifts all sound ships,” but that’s not so catchy.
