The only Communal societies that ever worked were religious Communes, and even then, the Apostles were forced to issue an edict recorded in 2 Thessalonians 3:10: ‘Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”’

The previous verses make this clear:

8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

9 Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to imitate”

So even in communes, you had to pay or work for your food.

Equal rights does not mean equal outcomes. In a free world, one who works should always be better off than one who doesn’t work.
