Stalin starved 4.5 million Ukrainian peasants with an artificial famine, then replaced then with ethnically russian peasants who were more amenable to being collectivised. That is why a “majority of the population in this region sees itself as Russian”.

I agree that it is a tortured history with faults on both sides, and there is little black and white obvious good and bad sides to this conflict, but Russia should not be allowed to justify the present-day invasion of Ukraine by the result of past genocides inflicted on the Ukraine. They should be honest and say they need to establish a buffer zone between Russia and NATO, and won’t accept having NATO bases on their borders.
