I understand exactly your evolution of political views as you acquire real-world experience. It was Sir Winston Churchill who said “If you are not a Socialist when your are 18, you have no heart! If you are still a Socialist when you are 30, you have no brain!”
Fascism and Socialism are in practise, exactly the same thing: we have been defining Left and Right incorrectly for decades: Left means Big Government, Central Planning and no individual rights or Freedoms. Right means Small Government, Free Market Supply and Demand, and Individual Freedom is paramount. At the extreme right, there is not Fascim, there is lassaiz-faire Anarchy. At the extreme Left is Totalitarian Dictatorship, and the Fascist or Marxist rhetoric is just the excuse for siezing total power.
Read 1984: “the Dictatorship is not imposed to protect the Revolution: The Revolution is imposed to bring about the Dictatorship!”
Your marks of a Fascist regime are equally applicable to Stalin’s USSR:
“ (1) all authority concentrated in one man; STALIN
(2) Persecution of German, Jewish, Cossack, Armenians and Koreans; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_the_Soviet_Union
(3) old-school Imperialism” — What about the occupation of Eastern Europe, the forsible removal of European population to central Asia and Siberia, and their replacement with ethnic Russians?
Hitler and Stalin both described themselves as Socialists, and as enemies of the Capitalist West. They were best of friends until they disagreed about how much of Eastern Europe would be German, and how much Russian. After that they fought total war against each other.
The two Socialist Totalitarian Dictatorships were indistinguishable from each other as oppressors of their own people. Moldbug is wrong: Hitler was as Left-wing as you can be. Post-war Socialists hated Hitler because he had fought against their Socialist Worker’s Paradise, the Soviet Union, so rather than suffer the cognitive dissonance of a Hitler as a “Bad Socialist”, they decided to re-brand him as a “Fascist” instead. It is called “Propaganda” and is part of the never-ending Socialist revision of history. Read George Orwell’s 1984 for what is still the best analysis by a Socialist of why Socialism does not work. Hitler as a Fascist is an example of “Double-think.”
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
“War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.”
“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”
Doublethink explains why American Leftists can believe that Donald Trump is a white supremacist, Jew-hating Nazi, while also knowing that his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren are Jewish.
