I remember when Democrats and Republicans could disagree on politics, but do so in a civil manner and still be friends afterwards. That means I must be old: I can remember when Americans all believed in Liberty, Freedom and Individual Rights, including Free Speech.
We have lost that civility somewhere during the George W Bush and Barack Obama Presidencies, and spectacularly so since Donald Trump took office. I think that is a shame: every question is debated from extremes now, never from the centre. We used to find common ground and compromise to get most of what we needed.
Now we look for differences and ignore anything we have in common, and insist on winning all the way, and compromising never. “If Freedom of Speech means Nazis can spout racism, then Freedom of speech is wrong!” I hear Antifa agitators shout.
Of course Racism is wrong, but Freedom of Speech requires that we allow people to say what they mean, even if we oppose every word they say. The principle of freedom of speech is more important than what anyone says on a specific day. A conservative once said “I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It!” ~ Evelyn Beatrice Hall.
