I applaud your wish for a better World, but do you realise how much better it is today than it was 20 or 30 years ago? Poverty is in retreat, not because of Socialist interventions but mainly because of Western Philanthropists trying to make the World a better place. There are thousands of NGO’s working to eliminate disease, hunger and provide sanitary conditions for the Third World, and much progress has been made.
Annual Letter 2014
"By almost any measure, the world is better than it has ever been. People are living longer, healthier lives. Many…
so when you say “In my view, we are at a historical crossroads…that we have no practical alternative but to share the resources of the world, otherwise we will undoubtedly destroy our planet and ourselves” I say there is little likelihood that we’ll destroy either: where is your proof of impending disaster? Virtually all Planetary indicators are that Planet Earth is healthier now than it has been for hundreds of years. We are already sharing the resources of the World on a voluntary basis through Rotary, Red Cross, Doctors without Borders and the Gates Foundation to name a few.
I fully agree with your point that Left Wing solutions to societal problems always lurch towards authoritarian regimes that just make things worse.
I disagree that “competition borne out of commercialization is literally killing us”, in fact competition is where improvements come from: everything from smartphones to electric cars were developed in a capitalist competitive free market. I see much hope for the future and no reason for the endless negativity of the left. If Government would restrict itself to enforcing ethical behaviour by Companies, rather than trying to control the market itself, progress would be even faster than it has been.
Your vision of a “middle way” with mutual respect and cooperation between Left and Right for the greater good is not impossible, but it requires that we have tolerance for those who hold views different to our own, and seek points of agreement rather than of difference, where cooperation is possible. The mutual hatred of Democrats and Republicans for each other in recent years is not just unpleasant, it is dangerous to the civil society that is a prerequisite for the tolerant, friendly community that is needed to address social problems. I believe that Charity, rather than Socialism will reform the World: it is already doing so.
