I agree with the need for a code of ethics for software developers, and indeed for all aspects of business, but I part company with you at this point: “Isn’t this socialism? Yes. Deal with it. But we’ve seen where the service economy leads.” Yes we have; it lifts billions of poor people all round the world into the middle class. Philanthropy is part of it, https://www.gatesnotes.com/2015-annual-letter?page=0&lang=en&WT.mc_id=01_21_2015_AL2015-GF_GFO_domain_Top_21 , but the real driver is Capitalism itself as a generator of new wealth. Regulate Capitalism by all means: enforce ethical behaviour, but don’t throw the Capitalist baby out with the Corruption bathwater.
But we’ve also seen where socialism leads: the 20th Century was a laboratory test of Socialist theory, and it failed every test, at the cost of millions of lives. Socialism is based on the theft of all private property, and the central planning of every aspect of the economy. “To each according to their needs, from each according to their means!” This is mind-numbingly stupid. Take away the incentive to work and no-one will work, except as brutalised slaves. Central planning does not work, has never worked and can never work. Ask Soviet East Europe, the USSR, Mao’s China, Pol Pot’s Cambodia or the Kim family’s North Korea how wonderful socialism and central planning are.
“ Mike Monteiro is a nice guy or a total asshole”. No, I think Mike is a nice guy who has been infected with the political opinions of an asshole. If he abandons the simple-minded belief in Socialism, there’s hope for him yet.
