Freedom absolutely requires the assumption of innocence until proved guilty. Accusation is merely the first step in establishing guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Sometimes that reasonable doubt may let a rapist off the hook, but that is the price we pay for Justice. The alternative is that innocent men are found guilty by witch-hunt of things that couldn’t be proved by the accuser in a court.
