America has a First Past the Post system for the Electoral College, it is not all that unusual for that to lead to a result at odds with the popular vote. It is a system that focuses campaigning on the swing states, and pretty much ignores the rusted on Democrat and Republican States which are taken for granted. A popular vote would focus campaigning on the National Level, because every vote would count. Trump and Clinton would have fought a completely different campaign, and Trumpo would have won the popular vote then. He didn’t win the popular vote because he didn’t need to: it wasn’t important.

Ask Bernie Sanders how he was treated by the DNC, and you will find that there is also a Party labeled the American Democratic Party, which is far from being democratic.
